The Pembrokeshire Energy Agency, formed in June 2000, promotes energy efficiency and renewable energy in Pembrokeshire. It is part of a network of over 200 energy agencies established throughout the EU under the ³SAVE II²
programme.
When the Agency moved into offices without a heating system, it took the opportunity to install a new type of wood pellet stove being introduced to Wales from North America. The push button controlled EnviroFire is green, clean and highly efficient and, in the future, will be fuelled by wood pellets from Wales.
Heat is blown into the room via a 90%-efficient heat exchanger, with output automatically adjustable between 2 and 12kW (6,500 to 40,000 BTU). A sealed hopper holds four days¹ supply of wood-pellets (at 6kw output) while the ash collector needs emptying only once every six months.
Wood has provided people with energy for longer than any other fuel, and is now coming back into favour as an almost carbon-neutral energy source. Wood-fuel also has economic benefits. The use of local resources creates jobs and diverts revenue back into rural economies. Exempt from the climate change levy, wood-fuel should also be an attractive option for businesses and public bodies.
